I’m Good, I’m Gone - Lykke Li

“And if you say I’m not okay with miles to go
If you say there ain’t no way that I could know
If you say I aim too high from down below
Well, say it now ‘cause when I’m gone
You’ll be calling but I won’t be at the phone”

Things are getting changing, time to make a new playlist to go with it.  Off the top of your head, what is the first song you would put on a playlist right now?

Of Monsters and Men: My Head Is an Animal

Of Monsters and Men is band for people who are looking for a nice folkie indie band to follow that isn’t Mumford and Sons. My Head Is an Animalis definitely a compilation of tasteful pop music, however fans of indie rock/alternative music will find elements within the music to appreciate.  Fans of Rogue Wave and Arcade Fire will enjoy the drumming, random screaming, and hand claps.  Fans of Stars will love the harmonization of male and female vocals.  Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir’s voice sometimes sounds like it’s channeling Kate Nash or Ingrid Michaelson, especially on tracks “Love Love Love” and “Yellow Light,” so there is something there for the somewhat girly (sometimes feminist?) indie fan.

However, despite all these comparisons, Of Monsters and Men has their own pleasant sound, I’m just encouraging you to give them a try and enjoy.

Favorite tracks: Lake House, From Finner, and Little Talks.

Xiu Xiu: Always

If you need cathartic relief, Xiu Xiu is always where you should turn.  The overly dissonant, heavily textured, offensive music always seems to be at perfection.  Once you start listening to Xiu Xiu, nothing else seems to satisfy your emotional indie music cravings. Xiu Xiu’s new album Always probably the most addictive album yet.  I particularly love “Smear the Queen” (track 11) which features Carla Bozulich’s mesmerizing vocals, and is perfect for when you are in a rather morbid mood.  “Beauty Town” (track 3) is perfect for when your feeling particularly angsty. “Honey-Suckle,” (track 4) actually sounds kind of fun.  However, don’t just listen to these three tracks, listen to them all.

Note: fans of the album Fabulous Muscles (2004) will particularly enjoy this.

New Singles

1. The Only Place- Best Coast

This reminds me a little of Best Friends Forever, but with better vocals (however the less than stellar vocals work very well for Best Friends Forever).  Also, it sound promising for a future summer playlist.

2. Blood for Poppies- Garbage

Love.  So Happy there is new music from Garbage.  This isn’t very reminisent of old Garbage music, however the guitar is pretty close, and there is that same awesome dark quality.  I don’t like this song as much as Only Happy When It Rains, but that is honestly never going to happen.  A good wake up song, or driving song.

3. Myth- Beach House

Beach House is always there when I need some honestly chill music.  It sounds as if they are continuing their more full and lush sound they started developing with last album Zebra, but they’re still not using too many instruments, which is what I love about them.  They’re staying true to themselves.

4. Multiple Love- Paper Aeroplanes

I love me a girl and a piano.
